The Ilkovic equation diagram
The Ilkovic equation models the diffusion-convection conditions surrounding the dropping mercury electrode. The response to a linear sweep is a sigmoidal shape with a plateau that may be analyzed e.g. to give the diffusion coefficient.

This equation describes the classical polarography experiment, but other potential sweep shapes can also be used for other experiments with dropping mercury electrodes. The diffusion current is found by the difference between the current plateau (average) and a linear extension of the low potential response.
