Capacitors in series diagram
When capacitors are connected in series, their capacitances are added as reciprocals. Thus, as more capacitors are added, the total capacitance is reduced.

When capacitors are connected in parallel, their capacitances are effectively added. This can be thought of simply as increasing the area of the plates in the capacitor.
This behavour is in contrast to that of resistors, which are additive in series, and reciprocally additive in parallel.
