Many capacitors and other capacitative objects can be considered as a pair of separated plates, and this clculation allows the capacitance of such systems to be found easily. The approximation is accurate so long as the separation between the plates is much smaller than the dimensions of the plates themselves.
The dielectric constant is frequency-dependant, so some capacitances may behave differently in different frequency applications.
