Chinese Year diagram
Every Chinese year is assigned a 'branch', represented by one of 12 animals. Due to language differences, the Rat year can also be translated as Mouse, the Goat as Sheep, and the Ox as Cow. The Rooster can be translated as Cockerel or even Chicken.

Note that the Chinese year actually changes on the full moon closest to Feb 6th (although it is not always clear which one to use if Feb 6th falls in the middle of two moons). So, if your birthday is before January 21st, then your birth year is in the previous Chinese year. If it is between Jan 21st and Feb 21st, then it may be in either.
This calc does not yet provide for exact dates, and only works from 1912 onwards.
