The speed of waves or ripples in water can be estimated from the wavelength (distance between crests) and the water depth, by use of a hyperbolic relationship. For ocean and sea waves the depth is large enough to have no effect.

It should be noted that this calculation does not take into account factors such as density (variable because of e.g. temperature and salinity), wave height, surface tension, and variations of the water properties at different depths.
