The power of a spherical lens can be estimated from the radius of curvature of its two faces and the refractive index difference between the lens and its medium.

The refractive index of the medium should be 1 if the medium is air, 1.33 for water, and ~1.4-1.5 for oil. Lens refractive index may be around 1.5 (glass) to 1.6 (polycarbonate), or higher for specialized materials.
