If you are searching for a calculator for the conversion of density units, this density converter is what you need!

You can use this calculator for the conversion of density units such as kg/cm3, kg/m3, lb/ft3, lb/yd3, lb/gal, and many more.

If you still don't know the density of your material, you can look it up with our density calculator (we have predefined density values for many materials).

The density definition says density is mass per volume. This quantity is present in many other physical quantities and formulas, for example:

Density units

We can find a lot of different density units, which include:

  • Kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3) — the official SI unit for density;
  • Grams per cubic centimeter (kg/cm3) — another metric unit used in most countries around the world, 1 g/cm3 equals 1000 kg/m3;
  • Avoirdupois ounces per cubic inch (oz/in3) — 1 oz/in3 equals 1730 kg/m3;
  • Avoirdupois pounds per cubic inch (lb/in3) — used mainly in the US;
  • Pounds per US liquid gallon (lb/gal) — 1 lb/gal = 0.11983 kg/m3.

How does this density converter work?

The basic idea behind this density converter is conversion factors. Conversion factors are numbers or quantities we use to switch from one unit to another. The validity of these factors relies on the idea that multiplying a quantity by one (×1) results in the same quantity.

For example, we know that 1 kilometer equals 1000 meters. As the quotient of two same numbers equals one, then:

1 km1000 m=1\frac{1\ \text{km}}{1000\ \text{m}} = 1

Based on the above ideas, we can, for example, convert 2000 meters to its equivalent in km by using the previous relationship:

 2000 m=2000 m×1=2000 m×(1 km1000 m) =20001000 km=2 km\ 2000\ \text{m} = 2000\ \text{m} \times 1 = 2000\ \cancel{\text{m}} \times \left( \frac{1\ \text{km}}{1000\ \cancel{\text{m}}}\right) \\\ = \frac{2000}{1000}\ \text{km} = 2\ \text{km}

In the same way, we can, for example, convert from 7000 kg/m3 to its equivalent in g/m3, considering that 1000 kg/m3 = 1 g/cm3:

7000 kg/m3=7000 kg/m31 g/cm31000 kg/m3 =7 g/cm37000\ \text{kg}/{ \text{m}^3} = 7000\ \cancel{\text{kg}/{ \text{m}^3}} \frac{1\ \text{g}/\text{cm}^3}{1000\ \cancel{\text{kg}/{\text{m}^3}}} \\\

= 7\ \text{g}/\text{cm}^3

That's how we can convert units manually, but if you want to do it in a matter of seconds, you must use our density converter.
